National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

PB&J Day - April 2 - Little Girl with Sign

Yes, National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day is almost here - April 2nd!! I wouldn't be a true sandwich lover if I let this day get away from me this year, now would I. I may have missed it last year, however this year is a different story.

We need every bit of comfort we can get, and a pb&j will definitely help with that. What do you think?

I know there are people out there who do not enjoy this comfort food. And personally, I feel sorry for you. It's okay though. I'm sure you have another sandwich that gives you that comfortable feeling when you need it.

For those of us who take comfort in eating this yummy mouthful of creamy peanut butter and jelly, jam, or preserves on your favorite bread, this page if for you.

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day:
A Delicious Celebration

So, you’re sipping your coffee and I’m stirring honey into my tea, and you casually ask, “What’s the deal with National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day? Where did it come from, and how do you think we should celebrate it?”

Let me tell you, this topic is one I can chat about endlessly because it combines a little history, a few quirky traditions, and one of the most iconic sandwiches of all time. It’s like peanut butter and jelly itself—a perfect pairing. Shall we dig in?

The History Behind the Holiday

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

Let’s start with the basics. National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day is celebrated every year on April 2nd. You know how many holidays have some type of deep historical significance. They're either tied to ancient traditions or commemorate great leaders?

Well, this one’s less about epic history and more about celebrating the simple joy of comfort food. And honestly, isn’t that enough to make it so special?

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is pure Americana, born out of practicality and a touch of creativity. Peanut butter itself goes way back—George Washington Carver famously promoted peanuts in the early 1900s as a versatile crop. While he didn’t invent peanut butter, his advocacy helped pave the way for its popularity.

By the 1920s, peanut butter was widely available in grocery stores, but it was considered more of an “adult food” at first. It was often paired with savory items like pimento or celery. Can you imagine peanut butter and celery sandwiches catching on as much as PB&J? Yeah, me neither.

Then, jelly enters the picture. Fruit preserves were nothing new, but during the Great Depression and World War II, they became staples because they were inexpensive and easy to store. With peanut butter already a pantry favorite, pairing it with jelly just made sense—a cheap, filling, and tasty meal that could feed families while sticking to a budget.

By the 1950s, the PB&J sandwich had cemented its place in American culture, beloved by kids and adults alike. It was fast to make, fun to eat, and packed with nostalgia. This made it the perfect subject for its own celebratory food holiday.

Why April 2nd?

April Calendar 2025 - April 2, PB&J Day

Okay, I’ll admit, nobody seems to know 'exactly' why April 2nd was chosen as the date to honor the yummy PB&J. But if you think about it, it’s perfect timing. Early spring feels fresh and fun—like shaking off the heaviness of winter.

And a PB&J? It’s just the kind of lighthearted snack that suits the season. Plus, it’s wedged between several other quirky food-related holidays, which I can’t help but think makes the sandwich feel part of a larger foodie festival vibe.

Maybe someone just decided to add all the food holidays around the same time, who knows. It works though. At least I think so. Any excuse to eat more PB&Js, is fine with me.

The PB&J Campaign’s Tie to the Holiday

Here’s where things get interesting. The PB&J Campaign, which I mentioned before, works to promote plant-based eating to benefit the environment. It’s all about showing how small choices, like eating a PB&J instead of a meat-heavy meal, can make a big impact.

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day is the perfect platform for their message—celebrating the iconic sandwich as not just tasty and nostalgic, but also eco-friendly. Someone was doing some definite multitasking!

Celebrating National PB&J Day

So, how do we celebrate this glorious ode to peanut butter and jelly? Oh, the options are endless, and you can customize your celebration depending on how big or simple you want to go.

Personally, I think the magic of PB&J Day is its versatility. You don’t have to throw a huge party (unless you want to!)—it can be as simple as making your favorite version of the sandwich and sharing it with someone you love.

PB&J Picnic

Here are a few fun ways to celebrate:

1. Get Creative in the Kitchen
Sure, you could stick to classic peanut butter, grape jelly, and white bread—but why not elevate your PB&J game? Try using almond butter, honey, or unique jams like fig or raspberry. Swap out the bread for waffles or croissants. Or go savory with a drizzle of sriracha or bacon bits (vegan bacon is okay, too)—trust me, it’s a game-changer.

2. Host a PB&J Picnic
April means the weather’s warming up (hopefully), so grab some friends and head to the park with a basket full of PB&Js. You can pack different varieties for everyone to try—like a PB&J tasting flight, but less fancy and way more fun.

3. Support the PB&J Campaign
Since the sandwich represents sustainable eating, why not take a pledge to eat more plant-based meals? You could even donate to organizations like the PB&J Campaign at A Well-Fed World to spread the word about how sandwiches can help the environment. (Link opens in a new window).

4. Make it a Family Affair
If you’ve got kids—or even if you’re just feeling nostalgic about your own childhood—set up a sandwich-making station at home. Let everyone pick their favorite spreads, fruits, and toppings to create a PB&J masterpiece. Bonus points for using cookie cutters to shape the sandwiches into stars, hearts, or other fun designs.

5. Share the Sandwich Love
Why not use PB&J Day as an opportunity for kindness? Make a batch of sandwiches to share with neighbors, donate them to a local shelter, or surprise coworkers with PB&J treats. It’s such a small gesture, but food has this incredible way of bringing people together. (I'll be sharing about The Sandwich Project soon to talk about this).

My PB&J Nostalgia Moment

Girl at Lunch Eating PB&J Sandwich

Let me tell you—PB&Js are tied to so many memories for me. I think about the soggy sandwiches packed in my school lunches, wrapped in too little plastic baggies, and yet somehow, they were still the best part of my day. Or the midnight snacks when I got home from college, when PB&J was the easiest (and cheapest) thing to throw together.

And don’t get me started on the grilled PB&J phase—crispy, gooey perfection. My brother-in-law turned me on to that one. The thing about PB&J is that it’s universal. It’s comfort food, nostalgia food, and for one glorious day a year, it’s celebration food.

So, my sandwich loving friend, now that we’re caffeinated and fully hyped up on sandwich trivia, what’s your plan for National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day? Are you sticking to the classic, or are you going to push the PB&J boundaries and try something new?

However you decide to celebrate, one thing’s for sure—it’s going to be delicious! Pass the peanut butter and the bread, would you? Chunky you say, don't mind if I do.
