The Sandwich Glossary Y-Z gives you words and terms that have to do with this perfect, portable meal. It can be as simple or as complex as you like. You can take it to work for lunch or eat it for breakfast or dinner. I'm sure if we think long and hard enough, we can come up with a few words to add to this list.
The list below contains words we have found so far that begin with Y or Z. You can add your terms to the Sandwich Glossary Y-Z as well. We've added a form below and you can add a term along with the definition of a word that we haven't listed.
It would be really great if our international visitors could add words that relate as well. I'd love to learn new sandwich words, just like I'm sure our visitors would, too. Pretty soon we'll have a great resource.

What exactly is a Yankee Sandwich?
The term Yankee Sandwich often refers to a traditional New England-style sandwich, which can vary depending on the region you live in. Here are a couple of popular examples:
- Roast Beef Yankee Sandwich - This sandwich typically features thinly sliced roast beef and is sometimes topped with horseradish sauce or mustard. It's served on a crusty roll or bread. It's a hearty sandwich that's popular in New England.
- Lobster Roll - While this sandwich is not always called a "Yankee Sandwich," it is a beloved New England sandwich. The filling consists of fresh lobster meat, usually mixed with a light mayonnaise or butter dressing, and served in a toasted hot dog bun.
As many know, the term "Yankee" is often associated with the northeastern United States, so these sandwiches reflect that region's culinary traditions.
A Yellow Submarine? What kind of a sandwich is that?
If you're a Beatle's fan, I'm sure you've heard the song "The Yellow Submarine" Well, the Yellow Submarine sandwich is a playful name for a submarine sandwich, also known as a sub, hoagie, or hero, depending on where you live.
The sandwich itself has no direct connection to the song, though. Oh well, it is a fun name.
A typical Yellow Submarine sandwich includes:
- Bread: A long, crusty roll (often a French bread or sub roll)
- Meats: Various options like salami, ham, turkey, or roast beef
- Cheese: Swiss, provolone, or American cheese
- Vegetables: Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and sometimes bell peppers
- Condiments: Mayonnaise, mustard, oil, vinegar, and Italian herbs and spices
And of course, it's a customizable sandwich, so you can add or omit ingredients depending on what you like!
Yogurt on a sandwich?
Sure! It's tangy and can easily take the place of mayo or other spreads. And if you're plant-based or vegan, you can even try a non-dairy version as a spread on your next yummy sandwich.
I've actually never thought of using this as an option, but it does make sense. Why not give it a try? I love yogurt anyway, so I think I'll give it a try, too!
Have you ever had Za'atar Bread?
Za'atar is a blend of herbs and spices, including thyme, oregano, and sesame seeds, commonly used in Middle Eastern cuisine. So, the bread made using this blend is......, yes you guessed it - Za'atar bread! You're so smart!
Would you like to know how to make your own blend? Here's a quick recipe to get you started.
Za'atar Spice Blend
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons dried thyme
- 2 tablespoons dried oregano
- 2 tablespoons sumac
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin (optional)
- 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
- Toast the sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat until they are golden and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes. Be sure to stir frequently to prevent burning.
- Allow the sesame seeds to cool.
- Combine the thyme, oregano, sumac, toasted sesame seeds, ground cumin (if using), and salt in a bowl.
- Mix well and store in an airtight container.
You can sprinkle Za'atar on bread with olive oil or use it as a seasoning for meats and vegetables or mix it into dips like hummus or yogurt. Pretty versatile!
What's a Zinger Burger?
If you're a KFC fan, you probably know this already, especially if you live in one of the places below. The Zinger Burger was actually created by KFC!
It first appeared on menus in 1984 in Trinidad and Tobago. The burger features a spicy fried chicken fillet on a toasted bun, often accompanied by lettuce and mayonnaise.
