If you love sandwiches, the Earl of Sandwich restaurant is probably not a surprise to you. I have to admit, that it was a surprise to me, though. The restaurant chain is a unique blend of history and modern culinary innovation. It pays homage to the invention of the sandwich itself by the 4th Earl of Sandwich.
The restaurant was founded in 2004 by three people, Lord John Montagu, who is in fact, the 11th Earl of Sandwich. His son, Orlando Montagu is the next one on the list, and Robert Earl, who is the founder of Planet Hollywood.
Needless to say, the concept was inspired by the legacy of the man who is credited with inventing the sandwich back in 1762. He was also named John Montagu, and as mentioned earlier, he was the 4th Earl of Sandwich.
If you're just learning about him, here is the story in short. According to the legend, the 4th Earl requested meat to be placed between two slices of bread so he could eat without interrupting his card game. That way he could eat while playing and not get his cards dirty. Great idea!
Well fast forward to now -- actually 2004 -- the first Earl of Sandwich restaurant opened in Orland, Florida at then, Downtown Disney (known as Disney Springs now).
The founders wanted to create a "fast-casual dining experience that celebrated the art of the sandwich". They offer high-quality ingredients that are prepared fresh. The restaurants tagline reflects a commitment to excellence and innovation in sandwich-making.
And what's the tagline you ask?
"The World's Greatest Hot Sandwich".
Yep, I guess someone had to come up with that one, right? Why not the Earl of Sandwich Restaurant.
Those who knew about the Earl's connection to sandwiches probably attributed to the restaurant becoming so popular so quickly. That and their made-to-order sandwiches, of course. They make their own artisan bread every day and have several favorite sandwiches on their menu.
They also have wraps, salads, and breakfast items including their fun breakfast sandwiches.
Since they opened in 2004, they've expanded to 49 locations around the world as of 2025. There are 27 in the United States, including California, Florida, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and more. There are multiple locations of the Earl of Sandwich restaurant established in Canada, France, South Korea, and the Philippines.
As you know, sandwiches are popular around the globe, so it's no wonder that they are able to resonate with so many diverse audiences. Their success can be attributed to their unique historical significance as well as their high-quality ingredients.
They seem to be committed to great customer satisfaction as well, which is always a good thing.
By honoring the legacy of the 4th Earl of Sandwich and embracing modern culinary trends, the restaurant has carved out a niche in this extremely competitive dining market.
Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or simply someone looking for a delicious meal, Earl of Sandwich offers a dining experience that will be both memorable and satisfying.
People love eating, and returning to, Earl of Sandwich restaurants for many reasons. Here are just a few.
1. Freshly Baked Bread: The sandwiches are served on artisan bread that is baked fresh daily. This adds a unique and delicious touch to every bite.
2. Signature Sandwiches: The fan favorites like "The Original 1762" and "The Full Montagu" as mentioned earlier, are crowd-pleasers that offer a perfect blend of flavors. Another highly rated sandwich is the "Holiday Turkey" sandwich with a filling of turkey, cornbread stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and mayonnaise.
3. Quick and Convenient Service: Another thing that keeps people coming back is the restaurants fast-casual dining option. It provides high-quality food without a long wait, making it ideal for busy diners, especially around lunchtime.
4. Historical Connection: The brand's ties to the 4th Earl of Sandwich and the invention of the sandwich itself add a fun and historical element to the dining experience. And as a sandwich lover, why wouldn't this simple little fact impress you? It does me. If an Earl of Sandwich ends up in my little town, we will definitely have to check it out.
5. Global Appeal: With locations in various countries, the restaurant has a universal charm. That appeal is one that resonates with diverse audiences. I'm wondering if the sandwiches are different depending on where the restaurant is-- I'm thinking yes, even though their signature sandwiches, the 1762 and the Montagu are available at every one of their locations.
