1. Big Bad Breakfast (Birmingham)  

  • Founded: The first Big Bad Breakfast was opened in 2008 by Chef John Currence in Oxford, Mississippi, before expanding to Birmingham.  
  • Sandwiches: Known for their hearty breakfast sandwiches, including the "Big Bad BLT," which features thick-cut bacon, lettuce, tomato, and a fried egg on toasted bread. They also serve creative options like the "Cathead Biscuit Sandwich," stuffed with sausage, egg, and cheese.

2. Brick & Spoon (Mobile)  

  • Founded: Brick & Spoon began in Louisiana and expanded to Mobile, Alabama, offering a Southern twist on breakfast and brunch.  
  • Sandwiches: Their "Bayou Benedict" sandwich is a standout, featuring poached eggs, Gulf shrimp, and a creamy hollandaise sauce on a toasted English muffin. They also offer a build-your-own breakfast sandwich option.

3. Chappy's Deli (Montgomery)  

  • Founded: Established in 1989, Chappy's Deli has been serving New York-style deli sandwiches with Southern hospitality for over three decades.  
  • Sandwiches: Famous for their "Reuben," which includes lean corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing on grilled rye bread. They also offer a variety of club sandwiches and wraps.

4. Dreamland BBQ (Tuscaloosa)  

  • Founded: Opened in 1958 by "Big Daddy" John Bishop, Dreamland BBQ started as a small rib joint and has become a legendary barbecue destination.  
  • Sandwiches: Known for their BBQ pork sandwiches, featuring tender, hickory-smoked pork topped with their signature tangy barbecue sauce. Their pulled pork sandwich is another fan favorite.

5. Edgar's Bakery (Birmingham)  

  • Founded: Edgar's Bakery was established in 1998 by Terry and Dottie Smith in Birmingham, Alabama.  
  • Sandwiches: Popular for their chicken salad croissant sandwiches, made with a creamy chicken salad filling on a flaky croissant. They also serve breakfast sandwiches like the "Egg and Cheese Croissant."

6. Momma Goldberg's Deli (Auburn)

  • Founded: The first Momma Goldberg's Deli opened in 1976 and is still open after 40 years.
  • Sandwiches: Along with their Momma's Love sandwich, you can also get a Big Daddy, Big Momma, and Momma's Nachos. There's even a book about their history, called "Momma's Love". (Link will open in a new window.)
