The Sandwich Glossary U-V gives you sandwich words and related terms that have to do with this yummy and delicious meal. Sandwiches can be as simple or as complex as you make them. From gourmet to simple and easy. You can eat them for any meal, even dessert.

Grab a cup of tea, coffee, cocoa or your beverage of choice and read through the list. At the very least, it will give you inspiration for your next sandwich meal.

The list below contains sandwiches and related terms we have found so far that begin with U or V. You can add to the list as well. We've added a form below and you can add a term and the definition of any sandwich or word that we haven't listed.

    1. Ube Sandwich - (Philippines) A uniquely sweet and colorful treat, this sandwich is crafted with ube halaya (purple yam jam), a dessert spread with a creamy texture and vibrant violet hue. It is often paired with a drizzle of condensed milk or a sprinkle of grated coconut.     2. Ukrainian Salo Sandwich - (Ukraine) A traditional and hearty sandwich made with thinly sliced salo, a cured pork fat that's a staple of Ukrainian cuisine. They are served on dense rye bread and enhanced with the bold flavors of minced garlic and crunchy onions to create a rustic and satisfying meal.

    3. Ulster Fry Sandwich - (Northern Ireland) This sandwich captures the essence of a full Ulster fry breakfast in a portable form. It includes savory elements like crispy bacon, succulent sausages, rich black pudding, and perfectly fried eggs. The ingredients are placed inside of soda bread or a fresh bread roll for a hearty start to the day.

    4. Ultimate BLT - (USA) A gourmet take on the beloved bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, the Ultimate BLT often includes elevated ingredients like thick-cut, maple-glazed bacon, heirloom tomatoes, crisp artisan greens, and creamy additions such as avocado slices or a fried egg. It is served on toasted sourdough or fluffy brioche and is a celebration of bold flavors and complimentary textures.

    5. Umami Burger - (USA) This burger is a feast for you if you love savory flavors. It is designed to highlight umami, the fifth basic taste. The ingredient list often includes a juicy beef patty enriched with soy sauce or miso. This can be topped with sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, and aged cheddar cheese. These are all nestled in a lightly toasted sesame seed bun.

    6. Unagi Sandwich - (Japan) A delightful fusion of traditional and modern cuisine, this sandwich features tender, grilled eel (unagi) glazed with a sweet-savory kabayaki sauce. Other ingredients include crisp vegetables like cucumber and pickled daikon and is served in a soft bread roll or as part of a bento box.

    7. Undhiyu Wrap - (India) Inspired by the classic Gujarati dish, this wrap combines the rich flavors of slow-cooked mixed vegetables like eggplant, green beans, and sweet potatoes, spiced with a fragrant blend of herbs and spices. These are wrapped in a soft flatbread to create a portable and flavorful vegetarian option.

    8. Union Square Burger - (USA) A gourmet creation often inspired by New York City’s Union Square, this burger is crafted with high-quality beef patties that have been cooked to perfection. Toppings such as truffle aioli, arugula, and smoked gouda cheese elevate it to an even more luxurious experience, all served in a brioche bun.

    9. Uruguayan Chivito - (Uruguay) Often referred to as the king of Uruguayan sandwiches, the Chivito is a hearty combination of thinly sliced steak, smoky ham, melty cheese, fresh lettuce, and ripe tomatoes.     10. Uzbek Non Wrap - (Uzbekistan) This sandwich-like wrap is a delicious homage to Uzbek flavors. It features non, a traditional flatbread, that is filled with tender marinated lamb, thinly sliced onions, and fresh herbs such as cilantro or dill. It’s an aromatic and satisfying meal.

    1. Vadapav - (India) A beloved street food staple, Vadapav consists of a spicy potato fritter (vada) encased in a soft, pillowy bun (pav). This sandwich is typically accompanied by a medley of tangy and spicy chutneys and a fried green chili on the side. It offers a burst of heat and zest in every single bite.

    2. Vada Pao Burger - (India) A creative fusion of the traditional Vadapav and the classic burger, this sandwich upgrades the street food favorite. It includes lettuce, juicy tomato slices, and melted cheese. These extras are layered alongside the crispy potato fritter, blending the traditional Indian flavors with a modern twist.

    3. Vada Sambar Sandwich - (India) Inspired by South Indian cuisine, this sandwich features savory vada (crispy lentil doughnuts) paired with the flavorful, lentil-based vegetable stew known as sambar. The combination is served in bread and offers a unique way to enjoy these classic flavors in a portable form.

    4. Vampiro Tacos - (Mexico) More than just tacos, Vampiro Tacos feature a sandwich-like experience with a crispy tortilla base. What's included?  Grilled meat, melted cheese, and freshly made salsa of course. The tortilla is often toasted to perfection, giving a delightful crunch that enhances the smoky, savory flavors.

    5. Van Dobben Croquette Sandwich - (Netherlands) A Dutch delight, this sandwich is made with Van Dobben croquettes—crispy, golden-brown meat-filled rolls. These croquettes are served on a fresh bun and accompanied by a dollop of tangy mustard. Sounds like a delicious and satisfying snack.

    6. Veal Cutlet Sandwich - (Italy) A delicious treat from Italy, this sandwich features a tender veal cutlet that has been breaded and fried to golden perfection. It’s layered with crisp lettuce, fresh tomato slices, and creamy mayonnaise, all tucked into a freshly baked roll.

    7. Vegemite Sandwich - (Australia)  A Vegemite sandwich is an iconic Australian snack made with Vegemite, a dark, salty spread made from brewer's yeast extract. It is usually served on soft white bread, but wholegrain bread can also be used. It is considered a staple in Australian households and a symbol of the country's culinary identity.

    8. Vegetable Club Sandwich - (Various) This is a colorful and nutritious multi-layered sandwich. This variation is packed with a variety of fresh vegetables like lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and bell peppers. Cheese, hummus, or mayonnaise often joins in the mix. They add creaminess and flavor to this delightful vegetarian option.

    9. Vietnamese Banh Mi - (Vietnam) A fusion of French and Vietnamese culinary traditions, the Banh Mi features a crisp, airy baguette filled with ingredients like marinated pork, pate, and pickled vegetables (carrots, daikon). Fresh cilantro, sliced cucumber, and a drizzle of tangy mayo complete this well-balanced and iconic sandwich.
